I know from my research that there are ways to jury-rig the system to eliminate the error message, such as sticking resistors in one of the circuits under the seat, buying an electronic device off eBay, etc. ![]() ![]() Estimated cost of the repair if done this way through the dealer: $2000. The dealer would fix the problem by obtaining a replacement front seat cushion assembly (with seat mat in it) and installing it. ![]() The consequence of the problem is that, in the event of a collision substantial enough to fire the airbags, the airbags on the front passenger side will fire even if nobody is in the front seat. My local dealer was nice enough to do a diagnostic analysis of the error and the root cause was determined to be the front passenger-side seat mat. I did some research on this site and elsewhere and learned that a broad variety of things can cause the error message, including small things like a damp seat or a lot of moisture in the car interior, a loose battery cable, a bad battery cable running from the front of the car to the battery in the trunk, a problem with the seat pretensioner and, a bad "seat mat" (which is a mat in the seat below the upholstery that you sit on. My 2008 M5 recently started reporting the passenger restraint malfunction when someone is sitting in the front passenger seat.
